The sign is constructed from 2-inch Ipe wood slats, with Indigenous terms incorporated throughout the individual pieces and highlighted with durable outdoor paint. Ipe was selected for its exceptional density, stability, weather resistance, and natural fire resistance, making it well suited for a high-traffic exterior installation. A UV-protective wood finish helps preserve the material while keeping long-term maintenance to a minimum. The open slat design also maintains the airflow required behind the structure, balancing visual impact with the practical needs of the building. Installation presented another challenge. Because the courtyard could not support the weight of a large delivery vehicle, the sign was designed and fabricated in multiple sections. Each section was then craned into the courtyard and assembled in place, allowing the finished piece to achieve its full scale without compromising the surrounding site. The result is a durable architectural feature that brings material, language, and place together in a meaningful way.
